Bitcoin is a virtual currency said to be created four years ago by a person or group going by the name of Satoshi Nakamoto. It is a currency designed to be outside of government control, conceived by libertarians, who believe in freedom of thought and action. It is not administered by a central group, making it very different from other digital currencies. Consider the Bitcoin to be a computer game for the tech savvy (or nerdy). There are 22 million potential Bitcoins of which about 11 million have been mined or won/earned to date. To mine a bitcoin one uses their computer to solve a complicated cryptographic problem. As each Bitcoin is mined, the mining of subsequent coins becomes more difficult. Along with those mining Bitcoins, many companies have sprouted up to facilitate the trading of Bitcoins and payment with Bitcoins; creating an undisclosed number of Bitcoin Millionaires. Reddit and WordPress allow purchasing through Bitcoin and even Wal-Mart supposedly allows purchasing through Bitcoins. Bitcoins have recently made the news, with their trading value jumping from $20 in February 2013 to a high of $266 in April per Bitcoin as a result of the Cyprus bank deposit tax issue. The Bitcoin value now sits at about $150.
