A couple in the United States paid a woman named Crystal $22,000 to carry their baby for them as they were unable to conceive a fourth child. 21 weeks into the pregnancy, it was discovered the baby had a cleft lip and palette, a cyst in her brain and heart defects. They were told the child only had a 25% chance of living a normal life. The parents wanted Crystal to have an abortion (they would pay her $10,000) while Crystal wanted to bring the baby to full term. In the end, the baby was born and given to other adoptive parents. She is 8 months old. If she does continue to survive, there is a 50% chance that she will not be able to walk, talk or use her hands.
