Kiera Wilmot, a 16-year-old high school student in Florida, has been charged with a couple of felonies for bringing a plastic water bottle to school and mixing a few household chemicals to create a small explosion and a billow of smoke. People who know her call it a "science experiment gone wrong" and say that she has never been in trouble before. She has been expelled and faces the real possibility of prison time, since she will be tried as an adult.

The school cites a zero tolerance policy. Their statement: "We urge our parents to join us in conveying the message that there are consequences to actions. We will not compromise the safety and security of our students and staff." Do you believe a zero tolerance policy is a good idea or should each incident be reviewed on a case-by-case basis?
