Results: Ontario Couple Finds 400 Year Old Skeleton in Their Backyard

Recently an Ontario couple who were digging in their backyard in order to put up a fence came across bones that turned out to be those of an Aboriginal woman who died 400 years ago. Have you heard about this story?

Unfortunately for the property owners, Ontario's 2002 Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act dictates that property owners are responsible for the cost of assessment if required if bones are found. Because a forensic anthropologist was called in alongwith a local coroner, the homeowners are now facing a bill for $5000. Do you think it is fair that the homeowners are responsible for these costs?

When one of the homeowners learned of the bill she was angry and outraged. She said she felt they were being punished for doing the right thing and calling authorities instead of simply covering up the bones and ignoring them. Do you think this case will discourage people from reporting remains they might find to authorities in the future?
