Columbia University offers a fellowship that can only be awarded to someone who is from Iowa and white. Due to the discriminatory requirements of the fellowship, Columbia University is now making changes to the Lydia C. Roberts Graduate and Traveling Fellowship. Interestingly, this is not the first time someone has criticized the award, as the NAACP complained in 1949 about the white’s only clause. In response, Grayson L. Kirk, stated that “We do not feel we are justified in depriving some of our students of the benefits of restricted grants simply because they are not available to everyone.”
