Hydrocodone is an opioid pain reliever that is an active ingredient in drugs such as Viocodin, Norco and Lortab. Hydrocodone is one of the most widely prescribed drugs in the US. It is also one of the most abused prescription drugs. Because of this, the DEA has changed the classification of all hydrocodone combination drugs from Schedule III to Schedule II. Because of this reclassification, as of October 6, 2014, patients cannot get automatic refills of hydrocodone. Pharmacies cannot accept prescriptions by phone, except for small amounts in an emergency. Patients who use hydrocodone long term must go to their doctor to get a written prescription every month. Do you think making it much more difficult to obtain hydrocodone will prevent abuse?
