Pigeons live in almost every big city in the world. They adjusted their lives to ours. They have an optimal vision system. They have facial recognition abilities to know which human they should get close to or not. They also have an excellent long term memory. And they have just tied with non-human primates in terms of math competence. They can not only discriminate quantities, they can also learn abstract mathematical concepts. The study, published in Science, discovered that pigeons can discriminate against different amounts of number-like objects, order pairs, and learn abstract mathematical rules. Aside from humans, only rhesus monkeys have exhibited equivalent skills. Thanks, Annema for sharing this information with us! Did you ever have a pigeon as a pet?

Since we moved to our apartment three years ago with three cats, we had a pigeon family living on the balcony. We were always friendly with them. They fly to our hands to eat. They let us touch the babies. The little ones step on our shoes as soon as they can walk. As I mentioned a few days ago, when dad died, mom left and one of the babies established a new nest. His babies are as social as the previous pigeons. They are free. They can go whenever they want. But they choose to stay. Do you have pets at home who are supposed to be enemies or prey, but end up being friends, like a cat and a bird? If you do, please let us know about your experience with them in the comments below. Thanks!
