On Monday, April 23, a beautiful sunny day in Toronto (one of the first truly spring-like days) was shattered in the blink of an eye. As hundreds of people were out enjoying the sunshine, during the lunch hours, a man drove a rental van up on the sidewalk and mowed down people, lights, mailboxes -- anything that stood in his destructive path. Did you hear about this horrible event?

On what was probably the most horrific day in Toronto's memory -- 10 people were killed and at least 15 more seriously injured when a man driving a rental van went up on the sidewalk of one of the busier intersections in Toronto -- there was one shining moment. As what is being hailed as a heroic act of justice and calm, Const. Ken Lam was able to apprehend the assailant, without firing a shot, and prevented many others from being killed or injured. The officer is being hailed as a hero by the Toronto Police Services, the news media and generally everyone who saw or heard this take-down, which was recorded and posted everywhere Monday. The officer insists he was just doing his job. Do you find it admirable that this officer was able to stop further violence without firing his gun or losing his composure?

Naturally, when something of this magnitude happens, immediate thoughts go to an act of terrorism. In this case, it looks like it may be a lack of mental illness awareness, and this man may have slipped through the cracks of our mental health system. However, whatever the case, funding for mental health awareness has long been an area that seems to be neglected. Millions is poured into research for cancer, other physical diseases, but very little into mental health research, and especially in early diagnosis and treatment. Do you think mental health screenings should be included in annual physicals?
