Yesterday, October 17 was the first day of legalized marijuana sales in Canada, and both cheers and jeers welcomed the new normal. There were no major hiccups reported in the first few hours of legal recreational marijuana sales at retail locations across Canada on Wednesday, though there were signs that supply could become an issue at both shops and online points of sale. So, how familiar are you with these facts of legalized marijuana -- which of these did you already know?

What is being seen as a very progressive step by Canada, the government will pardon all those with a prior pot possession record of 30 grams or less. Until now, simple possession of marijuana has been punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 and six months in jail. Individuals have been eligible to apply for a pardon through the Parole Board of Canada five years after the conviction is handed down. But the waiting period and the cost of applying for a pardon, known as a record suspension, have proven difficult for some people saddled with records. With this announcement, thousands of prior records will be eligible for a pardon, in what many feel is a long time coming, and a step in the right direction. Do you agree with this idea?

Of course with legalized weed, many other issues go hand-in-hand. Legalized does not mean "everywhere" and "anywhere". All three levels of government have a say in where marijuana can be sold, used or advertised. The result is a patchwork system in which the rules are different for every city and province, so everyone will need to do their research before lighting up a joint in public. All three levels of government have a say in where marijuana can be sold, used or advertised. The result is a patchwork system in which the rules are different for every city and province, so visitors will need to do their research before lighting up a joint in public. The province of Alberta, for instance, has some of the most liberal laws around smoking marijuana in public, but its largest city, Calgary, has banned public cannabis use except in designated areas. And of course, driving under the influence, is never allowed, and you can bet spot checks will be set up to make sure the public knows this and adheres to it. If you plan to partake, do you know your area's rules?
