A tweet over the holiday weekend that compared Ontario's COVID-19 public health measures to the Holocaust is under fire by many in the Jewish community and beyond. Randy Hillier is a member of the Ontario Provincial Parliament (Kingston), once a Conservative, but now an Independent. Hillier has been vocal about his feelings on how the Ontario government is handling the pandemic. He says masks and lockdowns are ineffective measures to combat COVID-19, and that the pandemic is impacting freedoms and causing more harm than good, and is finding traction among like-minded supporters. In his tweet, Hillier compared the government's measures to combat the third wave of the pandemic to the Third Reich, Adolf Hitler's Nazi Germany. Hillier said that Doug Ford and public health bureaucrats are deceiving the public, which he said would be remembered as "the greatest crime." Hillier's tweet comes just before Yom HaShoah, which is Holocaust Remembrance Day. Many are calling for his resignation. Do you think this man should be asked to resign as a Member of Provincial Parliament for his tweet?

If you are gay or trans in Arkansas, getting medical treatment has become much more difficult. Republican Governor Asa Hutchinson signed into law in March a bill giving medical providers discretion to refuse treatment to LGBTQ patients and others based on religious, moral, or ethical objections. The law, also known as the Medical Ethics and Diversity Act, states that even when a procedure is medically necessary, a provider can still refuse treatment, except in emergency situations. It is scheduled to go into effect late this summer, even as the Covid-19 pandemic rages on. Members of the LGBTQ community already experience medical discrimination at disturbingly high rates, and the new Arkansas law is basically giving health care providers the right to withhold medical care BY LAW, on their moral or religious grounds. This law not only applies to medical care, but to counseling, therapy, general medicine, PReP, hormones & other affirming care, as well as ambulance, EMT care & insurance coverage. Do you agree with this bill?

Joining an indoor crowd of thousands of people to dance, sing and listen to music might sound like a distant dream at this point in the pandemic. But for a select group of Spanish music fans, it was reality. Not only that, the government-sanctioned concert in Barcelona was something of an experiment, developed by infectious diseases physicians. The goal? To see if thousands of people can safely gather together for large events if they're screened carefully enough. Every participant took an antigen test the morning of the show, with their results downloaded automatically to an app on their phones, giving them access to their ticket. Only six people tested positive for having a "high viral load" of COVID-19 proteins, and were barred from attending the concert, and had their ticket costs refunded. Everyone else, all between the ages of 18 and 65 with no serious health conditions, headed in to watch the Spanish band Love of Lesbian. To make things safer, concert-goers also wore masks. The concert took place March 27, and the experiment continues, with the two week benchmark approaching. The organizers are going to know how many participants have been diagnosed with COVID, and they will compare that rate with a background population with the same age, during the same week and in the same city to prove there were no increased rates. If no difference, this could be the new normal for concerts in the future. Would you consider this type of experiment a great idea or a risky experiment?
