Results: Non-Jewish Florida Inmates Demand Kosher Food in Prison

Prison Officials in Florida are concerned that a large number of non-Jewish inmates are demanding kosher food. Officials had expected about 300 prisoners to request kosher meals, but more than 4,400 want the special meals. The kosher meals are in demand because they taste better than traditional prison meals. They are prepared outside the facility and individually wrapped to ensure purity. The state says it costs too much money to prepare special meals. Lawyers for a group of Muslim prisoners have said that their clients are denied "halal", which is food prepared under Islamic law. Muslims said they would accept a kosher menu instead of halal.
