It is not every day that a Canadian municipal election makes news in the States, but controversial Faith Goldy, one of several candidates running for Mayor in the city of Toronto, Ontario, is doing just that. Republican Iowa congressman, Steven KIng, who has a history of signalling his support for bigotry, has endorsed white nationalist Toronto mayoral candidate Faith Goldy. Goldy has recited and defended the white supremacist "14 words" slogan, recommended anti-Semitic reading, and expressed contempt for Muslims. She was fired in 2017 from Rebel Media, the far-right Canadian media organization, after she appeared on a podcast affiliated with the neo-Nazi Daily Stormer. King has argued against "mixing cultures," saying on Twitter in 2017, "We can't restore our civilization with somebody else's babies." In 2016, when he was a national co-chair of Sen. Ted Cruz's presidential campaign, he said that white people had contributed more to "civilization" than "any other subgroup." Are you familiar with this story?

The new face of white supremacy, or "alt right", "white nationalist", call it what you want, is both frightening and not surprising. Mark Peterson was awarded the W. Eugene Smith Grant for his work chronicling the rise of white nationalism in the United States. Mr. Peterson, who grew up in Minnesota, has been working steadily as an editorial photographer in the New York area for over 30 years. His stark, critical images provide a view of American political culture and have dominated the visual coverage of the rise of the right wing since 2013. His photographs anticipated the Trump era and were collected in the book "Political Theatre" published by Steidl in 2017. "This is a violent movement wrapped in the language of reclamation, patriotism and cultural heritage," he wrote. "Its central aim is the dismantling of decades of civil rights, immigration and gender equality legislation and the promotion of a revisionist history which claims slavery wasn't such a bad thing." Are you concerned about this increase in white nationalism?

Vancouver mayoral candidate Jason Lamarche became infamous after it was revealed that he had ranked women he'd dated by way of a misogynistic chart he published, including how he thought they performed in bed. He recently shaved off his problematic mustache (which resembled Hitler's) after receiving backlash for it.

Thompson, Manitoba mayoral candidate Ryan Brady, who has recently dropped out of the race, after his posts on social media nearly a decade ago came to light on the Anti-Racist Canada blogs. In them, he referred to immigrants as "vermin," Jews as "filthy creatures," Asians as "sly and cunning" and said that Indigenous people should stick to their reserves "and not bother us." The former Winnipeg resident founded a group that he called the "Winnipeg White Pride Warriors".

Hamilton mayoral candidate Paul Fromm has been one of Canada's most outspoken Holocaust deniers. Locally he helped promote Caledonia pro-white/anti-Native Rights agitator Gary McHale's rallies during the reclamation of the former Douglas Creek Estates land in 2006, and is a well traveled keynote speaker at neo-Nazi and white supremacist rallies across Canada and the USA.

Another candidate for mayor in multi-cultural Toronto is James Sears. He is the editor of a neo-nazi newspaper, Your Ward News, and a former doctor. His license was revoked after he confessed to multiple counts of sexual assault following complaints from female patients. He also has worked as a pickup artist, offering to teach men how to seduce women.

And yet, one more for Toronto mayor -- Chris Brosky, who is described as a neo-nazi skinhead, was convicted in Texas of murdering a black man in a drive-by shooting when he was only 16 years old. He served 16 years in prison before being released and deported to Canada. He previously ran for a councillor seat in the 2014 municipal election.
