April 9, 2021 saw two polarizing, iconic figures pass away. One was a Prince who sacrificed everything for his wife, the Queen, and one was a warrior in the music industry.

Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and husband to Queen Elizabeth II, died on Friday at Windsor Castle. He was 99. Philip was a pivotal figure in the British Royal Family. He was the longest-serving consort to a monarch in British history, having been in the role for more than 60 years. The Queen — a deeply private person — once called him "her rock" in public. Philip was a member of the Danish and Greek royal families, as the son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg. He had to renounce his Greek title from his family in order to marry Elizabeth — an allegedly difficult struggle for the duke, as recently shown on the Netflix series The Crown. He spent more than seven decades supporting his wife in a role that both defined and constricted his life. He was known for his occasionally deeply offensive remarks — and for fulfilling more than 20,000 royal engagements to boost British interests at home and abroad. He headed hundreds of charities, founded programs that helped British schoolchildren participate in challenging outdoor adventures, and played a prominent part in raising his four children. First and foremost he was there to support his wife. Do you admire him or not for sacrificing his own interests and ambitions to support the Queen the way he did?

** Video may be offensive to some ** Known for "blending menace with sincerity", DMX, the hip-hop artist behind the songs "Ruff Ryders' Anthem" and "Party Up (Up in Here)" who had one of rap's most distinctive voices, died Friday at the age of 50. The Grammy-nominated performer died after suffering "catastrophic cardiac arrest," according to a statement from the hospital in White Plains, New York, where he died. He was rushed there from his home April 2. While DMX (born Earl Simmons) made his mark as one of hip-hop's most recognizable names for his rap artistry and as an actor, the rapper was personally stifled by his legal battles — he was repeatedly arrested and jailed within a decade — and drug addiction. Despite a life filled with controversy, DMX still took the initiative to help the less fortunate. He gave a group of Philadelphia men advice during a surprise appearance at a homeless support group meeting in 2017, and helped a Maine family with its back-to-school purchases a couple years later. Even if you are not a fan of this type of music, can you acknowledge the contributions he made to the music industry?

Interestingly enough, a few weeks ago I read an article that said the month of April is an especially tragic month, historically speaking. Maybe that's part of the saying "April is the crulest month"...It seems that April has had an overwhelming number of tragic events -- and I saved this bit of information in the back of my mind. Which of these events do you remember hearing about (all happened in April)?
