The video for Hozier's new single "Nina Cried Power" is a powerful celebration of some of the amazing people who have or are creating change in the world and specifically Ireland. The video is a collection of Irish activists all with their own legacy listening to the song for the first time. These people all dedicated their time and energy to equality, civil rights, social equity and diversity, in the name of social justice, and the emotion in their faces listening to this song is very powerful. Written as a protest song to the many civil rights injustices people have faced, Hozier is both singing about the misery of the world, while also honoring and respecting figures like Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, and Mavis Staples (who sings on the track), who worked to change things through their music. The song which is named after the amazing Nina Simone, also pays homage to others who used their music for social change, like Joni Mitchell, Woody Guthrie, John Lennon and many others. Hozier had a big breakout single in 2013, in the equally powerful Take Me To Church, a song that many feel blasts the Catholic church, and is actually more a song about Hozier's relationships. The main point of this song is that Hozier feels closer to God (or the "good life" or "right living") in the act of love and in sex, not when he adheres to established religion. The chorus is an explicit and sarcastic attack on legalistic churches (or any church that follows guides which cause congregants to feel shame) Do you remember this song, and did you like it?
