When a concept album called Jesus Christ Superstar came out in 1970, by two virtual unknowns named unknown Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, critics and listeners did not quite know how to take it. Loosely based on the Gospels' accounts of the last week of Jesus's life, beginning with the preparation for the arrival of Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem and ending with the crucifixion, the album puzzled many. Flash forward 50 years, and Jesus Christ Superstar has become a bit of a phenomena, playing on a theater stage pretty well every night somewhere in the world, and also was made into a successful movie. Right from the start it was condemned by some religious groups. Tim Rice was quoted as saying "It happens that we don't see Christ as God but simply the right man at the right time at the right place." That of course did not sit well with many religious groups, It was condemned by Jewish groups as anti-Semitic, banned in South Africa for being "irreligious" and banned in the Hungarian People's Republic for "distribution of religious propaganda". Did you see any production of Jesus Christ Superstar?

Here are a few interesting facts about the album and subsequent musical and movie adaptions. Which of these did you already know?>
Lloyd Webber and Rice couldn't find anyone who was willing to produce the project as a stage show—in fact, they were told it was "the worst idea in history." So they transformed it into an 87-minute, two-disc concept album instead; it was released in 1970.

Norman Jewison directed the 1973 film adaptation, framing the musical with the troop of actor arriving by bus in Israel and preparing for the performance. Jewison's goal was to not have audiences believe that the movie was trying to depict sacred, biblical figures, but rather very human extensions of them, much in the tradition of medieval passion plays.
