This survey and its sequels feature recording acts who have charted one, and only one, single in the top 40 of Billboard Magazine's pop chart (currently called the Hot 100) from 1955 to or 2000-something, one for each letter of the alphabet.

A: The Ad Libs-The co-ed quintet's 1965 top ten entry, "The Boy From New York City," incorporates elements of doo wop, the "girl group" sound made popular earlier in the '60's and soul music as it was sounding then. As the titular character of the song and beau to the song's singer can, do you know of anyone who can rightfully claim to be from New York City?

B:The Buoys-If you're stumped to think of any radio hits about cannibalism, this Pennsylvanian band's 1971 top 20 entry, "Timothy," maty fit the bill (of fare?). At least it seems to be about humans feeding on another of their kind. Do you think feasting on a fellow homo sapien is an unfit subject for a rock song?

C: Bill Cosby-For all of his success as a stand-up comedian whose albums of shtick sold well from the 1960's into at least the '80's, among other entertainment accomplishments, he wasn't a major singles artist. "Little Ole Man," his 1967 spoof of Stevie Wonder's "Uptight," proved an exception, making the top five. Why it's not in oldies radio rotation nowadays is obvious and unfortunate. Despicable as the sexual crimes of which Cos' was convicted are, should they disqualify his artistry from being publicly appreciated while he's incarcerated?

D: Deodato-The man born Eumir Deodato De Almeida in Brazil started out as a bossa nova pianist/band leader and has his hand in various capacities on 500+ albums for acts of various genres. However, he can only count his 1972 funk-infused take on 19th century German composer Richard Strauss' tone poem,. "Also Sprach Zarathustra" as a top 40 hit under his own name. Strauss drew inspiration from a philosophy book by Friedrich Nietzsche, but the original piece was popularized in in the 1969 movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. Was Deodato a bit late on giving the world his take on this composition?

E: Eden's Crush-Before Kelly Clarkson graduated from American Idol to be a hitmaker in her own right, this distaff quintet came to brief fame via the reality show Popstars. They made the top ten in 2001 with "Get Over Yourself" before member Nicole Scherzinger left to front the similar-sounding, somewhat more successful ensemble that must here be called The P-cat Dolls. If you recall the 'Dolls, which of Scherzinger's groups do you prefer?
