Brominated Vegetable Oil (BVO) is in around 10% of sodas in the US. It is in the following drink products: sports drinks (like Powerade), Mountain Dew, Squirt, Fresca, Sunkist Peach, and Fanta Orange. Do you drink any of these on a regular basis?

BVO was originally deemed "generally recognized as safe" in 1958, but that classification was withdrawn due to 1970s studies finding it linked to heart disease in rats. It has since been classified as an 'interim food additive,' pending future studies. Medicinal cases has stated the following side effects due to BVO in 2 patients. One man who was drinking 2-4L of soda per day: headaches, fatigue, a loss of motor control, and of memory. He needed dialysis treatment, and recovered. Then there was another man who developed swollen hands with oozing sores. He was diagnosed with a rare skin disease (bromoderma) caused by having twice the normal amount of bromine in his blood. He had been drinking about 8L of Ruby Red Squirt each day. In Jan '13 PepsiCo said they would be removing BVO from their Gatorade due to customers' concern, despite them acknowledging that they "don't find a health and safety risk with BVO." At the time they also said they had no intention of taking BVO out of Mountain Dew or Diet Mountain Dew. What do you think of this?
This is fishy. Why would they keep it in the less healthy drinks, but claim that there was no health or safety risk?

I think that it was just to comfort the consumers of Gatorade.

I don't have an opinion on it because I don't drink these beverages and it does not affect me.

  • there are a lot of additives in our food that cause all kinds of problems, however this is a capitalist system. money and greed trumps everything. this is one system that kills you on one hand and complains about costly healthcare on the other.

  • were there any other items these people were drinking/eating that could have cause this stuff? if they are drinking this much soda is an indicator that they are probably not doing a lot to take care of themselves
  • i don't think they really know enough about these additives and they should not be allowed in anything until they are totally proven safe!

  • we have got to start reading the labels!!!! if a product contains anything i am unable to pronounce i don't ingest it! they put sooo many chemicals in most stuff now, and we won't know if it will harm us for years!!!

  • idk
  • okay, seriously? the two men mentioned were drinking way too much of it. if you were to drink way too much of anything it would poison you. yes, even water.
  • get rid of it
  • heard about this. typical. but these people sound like their drinking too much soda anyways.
  • i think it should be considered what other contributing factors could be involved. there is not enough scientific evidence about the research of bvo in my opinion and there should be more than 2 patients studied. if they want to drink it that is their choice, they should read the ingredients.
