For many young adults and teens, going through something as devastating and life-changing as cancer has to be the hardest thing they will ever go through. When all their friends are worrying about grades, friends and getting into university, some have to worry about chemo appointments, hair loss and MRI appointments. A charitable foundation based out of Quebec, Canada wants to change lives by pushing these young cancer survivors completely out of their comfort zone.

The foundation was started in 1996, when Dr. Sylvain Baruchel, a pediatric oncologist, after having one of his young patients die, thought it would be wonderful to give these young cancer patients the possibility of an extraordinary challenge, an experience from which they could grow and be inspired. He contacted François Guillot, an adventure tourism expert, and asked him to organize a dog sledding expedition for young people with cancer. The first expedition took place that year, and for the last twenty years the foundation has been organizing these trips, several times a year, for young cancer survivors who have either recently finished treatment, or are still in treatment. These trips are 100% paid for by corporate and private donations, and are available to anyone across Canada who fits the criteria. Do you know anyone who has ever taken part in one of these expeditions?

The name of the foundation is in reference to the fact that the only way to overcome your fears and insecurities is to live your life "on the tip of your toes", which is completely out of your comfort zone and always pushing yourself to your limits. The expeditions take place all year round, and are for various levels of adventurers. They all have some things in common--they are all physically and mentally challenging and all take place completely off the gird. Here are just some of the expeditions. Which ones do you think sound like something you would do?

I actually took part in the white water rafting and wilderness camping trip this August, and it was probably the best experience of my life. I went so far out of my comfort zone, since until this trip, I had just done some weekend camping with friends, and usually with a washroom within a few steps. Up until this experience, I thought cancer was the hardest thing I ever had to deal with, but this was a whole different story. Everyone on the trip had been through cancer, some several times. We all had this in common, but not much more. By the time the trip was over, the bond we felt was special and life-affirming. It definitely made me appreciate life more, and see what is important in life. Do you think that sending these cancer survivors on this type of adventure is a worthwhile cause?

Yes, for the simple reason that what they get out of it is better than any of the therapy anyone can offer

This foundation is similar in its goal to the Make-A-Wish foundation, which is set up for younger cancer patients, and those living with life-threatening diseases. Do you donate money to these types of charities?
