Doctors can now prescribe visits to Toronto's Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). The Museum has announced a new health and wellness initiative that will help the well being of many at no cost. As part of a one-year social prescription pilot program, the ROM is working on a collaborative effort with the partners of the ROM's Community Access Network (ROMCAN), and it provides "an opportunity for people accessing health or social services to benefit from the uplifting experience of engaging with art and culture." And starting in January 2019, healthcare and social service providers can "prescribe" a visit to the ROM as a non-medicinal, therapeutic service to promote health and well-being. The ROM says that with a referral through the Social Prescription Program, individuals are given a ROM pass (valid for up to four visitors) to enjoy free general admission to the museum and its associated activities. This initiative is beneficial for many people in different ways. Do you think you know anyone (or even yourself) who could benefit from any of these ways?

Art galleries are idea-generating machines. After all, every piece of art started with an idea – even if it was just the idea to throw paint at the wall. The more ideas you encounter and the more you play with those ideas in your mind, the more likely you are to come up with ideas of your own.

Perhaps the term "magic touch" has more basis in reality than we thought. A study conducted by researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder and Israel's University of Haifa found that when lovers hold hands, their heart and respiratory rates synchronize, and pain is reduced. It's the latest scientific evidence that touching really does heal. And the healing power of physical touch can be measured. Doctors have found, through laboratory tests such as MRIs, that there are evident changes in the patterns of brain activity during touch. Certain types of endorphins are released. These endorphins combat stress hormones, resulting in a sense of relaxation and peace. And it could help doctors find better ways to manage patients' pain without the use of addictive opioids. So, that kiss you got from your mom when you skinned your knee, or the hug you got after a painful inoculation didn't just make you feel better, it actually reduced your pain. We know touch can make us "feel" better, but do you believe that touch can really help reduce physical pain?

Given that touch appears to alleviate pain, and art is good for our general physical well-being and emotional balance, it is no surprise then, to learn that one of the most therapeutic hobbies a senior can develop is creating art. More than providing something fun to stimulate the brain, creating art and doing crafts can also be cathartic. From painting, sculpting and scrapbooking to photographing, knitting or sewing — art is one of the best activities seniors can practice. Even better, art can also be done as a social activity with family or friends, so that mingling happens while stimulating the mind and soul. Engaging and fun, art is a great activity at any age, but is especially helpful and rewarding for retired seniors who have time and need activities to keep their minds alert. Art therapy is even used to help stimulate the brain, stir memories and give those with dementia a better quality of life. If you are considered a "senior", do you participate in any form of art or crafts?
