Although the worldwide cases of covid-19 hit 10,918,178 (as of July 2), the good news is that as of that date 6,105,635 are fully recovered -- the recovery rate is even higher in Canada and the U.s.

There are more than one hundred vaccines in preclinical development by pharmaceutical companies, academic institutions, government agencies, and others. More than seventy of these are being tracked by the World Health Organization. Seventeen vaccine candidates, across at least ten countries, are already undergoing clinical trials. One of these has been approved for limited use by the Chinese military.

Although it may still be too early to say, it does appear that the virus may be losing some strength. At present, it seems that patients in hospital are four times less likely to die now than they were in April, experts have revealed. For example, data from April showed that of the 10,387 people in hospital in England with the virus, 644 died. On June 15 it was just 50 out of 3,270. This may be due to better treatment options, and quicker diagnosis.

In Canada, Covid-19 cases have become less severe, with a lower rate of patients needing hospitalization or mechanical ventilation. From June 17 to 23, 10 per cent of cases were admitted to hospital, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada's latest epidemiological report, compared with a hospital admission rate of 15 per cent since the start of the pandemic. The numbers for intensive care unit admissions are similar: 17 per cent from June 17 to 23, compared with 20 per cent since the start of the pandemic. And last week, only 2 per cent of patients in hospital needed mechanical ventilation, compared with 4 per cent since the start of the pandemic. And although this is all good news, Canada has still opted for a slow, steady, regional approach to re-opening the economy, and increased mandating of facial masks and continued physical distancing. Canada is seeing its cases drop significantly, as well, not only the severity of these cases. Do you think Canada's approach to the pandemic is admirable?

Now the bad -- despite records numbers of cases in recent weeks, Chase Rice — the up-and-coming American country singer — neither apologized or expressed regret for putting 1,000 of his fans at risk, during a recent concert. The concert in question took place on Saturday, June 27, at the Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary in Petros, small-town Tennessee, and completely avoided all social distancing regulations set in place to help mitigate the spread of the virus. A Vanilla Ice concert scheduled originally for this Friday, in Texas, one of the hardest hit states, had been cancelled at the last minute, despite the rapper's insistence that it go on. At the last minute, he did cancel, citing his concern for his fans' safety. Do you think these concerts should be allowed?

And now the truly ugly. Young people in Alabama are throwing covid-19 parties, a disturbing competition where people who have coronavirus attend and the first person to get infected receives a payout. The parties are being held in Tuscaloosa, and infected people are urged to attend so others can intentionally contract the virus. The "winner", the first person confirmed by a doctor to have coronavirus after the exposure wins the money made off the ticket sales. This has been confirmed by both doctors and the state of Alabama. The city is working on getting the word out and breaking up such parties. It also passed a mask ordinance this week that goes into effect Monday. The Alabama Health Department has reported about 39,000 confirmed coronavirus cases and nearly 1,000 deaths. Have you heard about this disturbing practise?
No, but this is unbelievable
