I use a lot of Amazon "discount" sites and groups. This means I get a bunch of my gifts I give people either free or at a very low cost. I normally don't tell people, however I recently told my sister-in-law that her husbands birthday gift only cost me $1.10. The item normally costs $55. She was excited and told me how much he would love it. A week later it came in the mail and I told her I got it in. She said "oh you didn't need to spend that much on him. I know you are having money problems." So to reassure her it's no big deal I told her I got it for only $1.10. Her response was "oh that's cool. What else are you going to get him?" I explained that I wasn't going to get him anything else. It turned into a huge disagreement.

Last year I won a $150 fitbit from a sweepstakes. I gave it to my SIL for Christmas. She wears it everyday. I told her that fact and that it's not cheap of me to give gifts of things I got for free because they are still worth the price. It's still a $150 fitbit even though I got it for free. Would you give something you won to someone as a gift?

She then said that yes it's a $150 but that I didn't spend $150 on it. She spends actual hard earned money on the gifts she gives. Would you feel cheated if someone gave you an expensive gift, but didn't tell you they didn't actually buy it?

She said I should at least inform people that I didn't spend money on my gifts and that they shouldn't spend any money on me. Would you care if you spent $100 on a gift for someone and they didn't spend anything on you; However, they did give you a gift that is worth $100?
