Since 2015, residents of the state of Maine have been allowed to carry a concealed firearm without any special permit, and now the results are in: crime has fallen to the point where the state is now rated the safest in the nation from the threat of crime. Does it surprise you that allowing anyone to legally carry a concealed firearm would result in drastically lower crime rates within 4 years?

The Maine Examiner reports: When Maine passed a "Constitutional Carry" law allowing Maine residents to carry a concealed firearm without any special permit in 2015, opponents of the law forecast a dangerous future for the state. They said the new law would hurt public safety and put Maine kids at risk. One state representative who opposed the bill went so far as to say it would give Mainers a reason to be afraid every time they went out in public or to work. If your state or province allowed concealed carry, would you be afraid to go out in public?

The US News &World Report rankings of the safest states has named Maine as the safest state in the nation. Alternatively, Chicago, Illinois has some of the strictest gun laws in the country – however, according to the Chicago Tribune, there have been 413 homicides so far this year. (Maine has only a rate of 124 violent crimes per 100,000 inhabitants) I, personally, feel that this stands to show that it isn't the firearms that are at fault for homicide rates, but the mindset of the people using them. Do you agree?

But this isn't unique to Maine. Vermont, America's second-safest state, also has a similar constitutional carry law. Do these facts make you consider that perhaps making it legal for law-abiding citizens to carry firearms – and balance out the criminals carrying firearms – might be a reasonable means of making our communities safer?
