Whether it's cheese curds, poutine, or candy shaped to look like a potato (yes, really), many places have foods that may be difficult for non-natives to embrace. For the record (and before anyone starts in on me) I personally like both cheese curds and poutine. Send me some chocolate covered "potato" candy and I will give it a try and probably like it because, well, chocolate. Here are some Southern favorites which unlike Nashville Hot Chicken or Red Velvet Cake don't seem to have spread to the rest of the world. If you enjoy these, you just might be a Southerner. With apologies to comedian Jeff Foxworthy, here we go...

Biscuits and chocolate gravy are simple to make. Take one biscuit (plain old buttermilk or southern style- your choice) and drizzle generously with chocolate sauce (this should be made from real cocoa and not not not store bought). Do you enjoy this little treat? If so, you just might be a Southerner...

Peanuts in Coca Cola really are a thing. Depending on your frame of mind at the time, this is either a meal or a hearty snack. Here's the recipe: Drink a few swigs of your soda to make room and then pour in a small bag of peanuts. Good cooks know that this only works in glass bottles and that the peanuts must be the salted variety. And Coke. No Pepsi. My mother enjoyed this from time to time all her life. She was a Southerner. This next delight was my mother-in-law's favorite. Crumble cornbread into a tall glass, pour ice cold buttermilk over the cornbread, let it soak a minute then grab your spoon! My mother-in-law swore she liked this concoction better than ice cream- and yes, she was definitely a Southerner. Do you believe her?

One of Tennessee's most revered achievements has to be the 1917 invention of the MoonPie. This snack cake (marshmallow sandwiched between two soft graham cookies and dipped in chocolate) is paired with RC Cola for the best lunch ever. You heard me. Lunch. The soda must be RC and only RC- which should never be referred to as Royal Crown Cola- if you are to qualify as a real Southerner. RC was introduced in 1905 in Atlanta, GA. Through a series of mergers, trades, and buyouts, all non-US RC-branded business is based in Canada. Does this surprise you?

Pineapples are often used as a symbol of hospitality. I don't know why, but you can look it up if you don't believe me. Anyway. Southerner's- real Southerners- love pineapple everywhere except their pizza which is a whole 'nother topic as we are going to talk about the infamous Pineapple Casserole. Served hot, this dish combines pineapple- crushed and chunked- with butter, sugar, and cheddar cheese. Topped with crumbled buttery crackers, it is baked and served hot as a side dish. It is not, I repeat, NOT a dessert. Does it surprise you to learn that this dish is as divisive as Hawaiian pizza in some Southern families?
