Scientists made a groundbreaking discovery: a cave on the Moon that is at least 100 meters deep and could be an ideal location for a permanent human base.

Scientists have long suspected that the "pits" on the Moon's surface were actually entrances to lunar caves. Using radar, they successfully traced the pit's walls down to a rock pile between 130 and 170 meters below the surface, with underground paths leading away from it. The team said that the newly confirmed cave was likely created by lava flows through lunar rock millions or even billions of years ago. Sound interesting?

A lunar cave could protect the astronauts who would be building the first human settlement on the Moon, keeping them less exposed to extreme temperatures, space weather, and radiation. Former British astronaut Helen Sharman said that future astronauts could rappel into the cave and use elevators or jetpacks to return to the surface—and that this could happen in as little as 20 or 30 years. Do you think people could be living on the Moon in 20 or 30 years?
