Studies have stated that say having boys can shorten the mother's lifespan. One reason is that carrying a boy is more difficult due to boys growing more quickly in the womb, having larger birth weights(usually), and the testosterone which can weaken the mother's immune system.

Critics of the study say it was done based on more than 11,000 mothers in pre-industrial Finland from parish records kept by the Lutheran Church from the 17th-20th centuries. Clearly life has changed quite a bit since that time and so has medical care and the stresses place on the family. Do you think the differences in the modern world would change the results of the study?
