Results: At what age do you believe parents should allow children to stay home alone for about an hour?

My daughter is 12 years old and in the 7th grade. I walk her to school and pick her up. However she has classmates that live further from the school than we do, who walk to and from school alone. I have friends who say I'm being too protective!! Can I get some advice?
