A boy who visited the Standing Rock camp with his mother and younger sister in 2016 has written about his experience in a new children's book. Young Water Protectors: A Story about Standing Rock chronicles Aslan Tudor's experience as an eight-year-old at the camp. The Dakota Access Pipeline, a project to be built through four states, was rerouted near the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation after a proposed route near the state capital Bismarck was denied due to it being deemed too risky for water supplies, In April 2016, Standing Rock Sioux elder LaDonna Brave Bull Allard established a camp as a center for cultural preservation and spiritual resistance to the pipeline; over the summer the camp grew to thousands of people. The protests drew considerable national and international attention and have been said to be "reshaping the national conversation for any environmental project that would cross the Native American land." Aslan was one of hundreds of children at the camp. He wanted to write this book so other children would learn about what happened, and to help them realize they, too, have important stories to tell. Do you think this is an important book for children to read?

Do you think that children still in elementary school can understand and should be taught about important social issues such as the one in this book, or others or do you think they are too young to learn about these types of issues?

Some feel that activism, defined as the policy or action of using vigorous campaigning to bring about political or social change, should be taught to our children at a young age, to make them better citizens. I agree, as my husband and I started teaching our children at an early age to be politically aware, socially conscious and to stand up for what they felt were injustices and causes worth standing up for. We felt that having an attitude of "it's not my concern", "I live in Canada and not in that part of the world", "it does not affect me" or other "excuses" was not an option. We taught them to think globally and because of this, I feel we raised kinder and more aware children. Did you raise your own children to be socially aware and even activists?

The song "Teach Your Children Well" written by Graham Nash, and recorded by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (released in 1970) was about this very topic. It is not a new concept, but it has never been so pertinent as today. Do you like the message of this song?
