When the Roman legions invaded England in the 1st century A.D., they brought along cats to protect their food supplies. Those cats soon mated with local street cats, resulting in the homegrown favorite, the British Shorthair. With its plush coat and square but kindly face, this breed has an air of dignity and reserve.
