Sometimes this is the result of a cat fight but a clean cut across the tip of one ear is done by a vet after spaying or neutering a feral or stray cat. This is called eartipping and is done to save a cat the unnecessary trauma of a visit to the vet as well as identifying them as members of a managed colony. What do you think...
This is a great idea.

A friend of mine owns a ranch and has around 30 to 40 cats that have all shown up over the years, they're all spayed and neutered and are very well taken care of. Now and again a new cat will appear, she's traps it and takes it to the vets to be spayed or neutered along with getting the necessary shots. One male ginger tom showed up recently, he had no collar and appeared to be hungry, after several days she presumed he was a stray and took him to the vets to be neutered. Long story short this cat actually had a home, he lived in one of the houses across the street. Do you think she did the right thing in getting him neutered?
Yes, and I would have loved to see the owners face when the cat arrived home minus certain parts of his anatomy.

No, she should have waited longer than a few days before she made the decision.
