The largest waves on the planet the next couple of days are forecast for the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, Canada, an area of the world known for its share of intense weather. And while with water temperatures of 4.4°C / 40°F and current outdoor temperatures of 0°C / 32°F surfing may not be on your "to do" list, these waves are impressive nonetheless. Winds gusting upwards of 130 km/h 80 miles/h are causing giant waves, with delays, cancellations and closures bringing life to a standstill. There are 12,000 customers across the province without power due to the severe weather and wind. The effects of this incredibly strong low pressure system moving through Atlantic Canada will cause more than ripples across the Atlantic Ocean this week, causing giant waves to track towards Europe and Africa. Meanwhile, in the U.S., most of us are well aware of the California wildfires, still raging, that have been described as the worst wildfire disaster on record. As firefighters work endlessly to control California's raging fires, experts warn of long-term damage from wildfire smoke that could affect millions - and potentially even those on the east coast.. Have you been personally affected by these fires?

Every year, as winter approaches, the only thing more unpredictable than our weather, is the predictions on how bad the winter may look. Every source, from the Old Farmer's Almanac to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center try and let us know what we may have in store. Some even look to the animal kingdom, and how they prepare for the season. And predictably, every year, some get it right and some get it wrong. Which of these predictions have you heard for this coming season?

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center predicts that no parts of the U.S. are due to see a colder-than-normal winter. Drier-than-average conditions are expected for the Great Lakes and portions of the Northern Rockies and the Northern Plains. Precipitation is expected to be above normal across the southern tier of the US, extending up into the Mid-Atlantic.

According to the The Old Farmer's Almanac, expect to see above-normal temperatures almost everywhere in the United States, except in the Southwest, where we're predicting a colder-than-normal season. They are predicting colder-than-normal winter temperatures for most of Canada. The exceptions to this are northern Atlantic Canada, where temperatures will be milder than normal, and Pacific Canada and the southern two-thirds of Ontario, where temperatures are expected to be within the normal range. And above-normal level of snowfall is predicted for all of Canada

Environment Canada is currently expecting the country to have a much more "milder than normal" winter this year, something that's been predicted for a while now because of an El Nino affect.
