April 8 was Yom Hashoah: Holocaust Memorial Day, an annual day of remembrance of the victims of the Holocaust, observed by Jewish communities worldwide. On April 8, 1959, the Israeli Parliament, the Knesset officially established the day when it passed the Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Day Law with the purpose of instituting an annual "commemoration of the disaster which the Nazis and their collaborators brought upon the Jewish people and the acts of heroism and revolt performed." Do you personally know of anyone who died in the Holocaust?

Some people feel, as time goes on, that there is no need to learn about what happened all those years ago, since there are many more modern day stories of genocide. And while it is true, with what happened (and still continues to happen) in Rwanda , Darfur, Bosnia and Herzegovin, the lessons from the Holocaust are still important and relevant today. It is important to not spread messages of hate, or to discriminate, exclude or persecute people because of the colour of their skin, their sexual orientation or what religious beliefs they have. The messages of the Holocaust seem to be fading these days, and this is alarming, because it looks like the lessons learned are due to be repeated, with the rise of white supremacists, and "hate crime" attacks in the U.S. and Canada, as well as all over Europe and beyond. Most of us here are well aware of what happened in the Holocaust, but which statement best describes you:

On January 27, 2020, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Never Again Education Act 393-5 with four Republicans and one Independent, Michigan Rep. Justin Amash, voting against the bill. A slightly different version was adopted by unanimous consent in the Senate on May 13, 2020. The legislation expands the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum's (USHMM) education programming to teachers nationwide, requiring the museum to develop and disseminate resources to improve awareness and understanding of the Holocaust and its lessons. Do you agree that this should be taught in the schools?

The emotion and memories of that tragic time has been translated to film for years. "Schindler's List" is probably one of the most famous films made. How many of these excellent movies and documentaries on the Holocaust have you seen (this is only a partial list and by no means definitive list)?
