Some of our most cherished Christmas songs actually come from movies or shows that have nothing to do with Christmas. Popular Christmas songs, including Joni Mitchell's breakup song "River," Rodgers & Hammerstein's "My Favorite Things," The Waitresses' "Christmas Wrapping," The Kinks' "Father Christmas," and The Pretenders' "2000 Miles," all of which found their Christmas niche through seasonal themes or movie placements like Mean Girls. "Hard Candy Christmas" is a song written by composer-lyricist Carol Hall for the musical The Best Little Wh*rehouse in Texas, and sung by Dolly Parton. It was released as a single in 1982, and has been adopted as a Christmas song on many playlists. According to Dolly, this is definitely not a Christmas song, despite the word being used. The phrase "hard candy Christmas" refers to a time when families who did not have much money could only afford to give hard candy or penny candy to their children at Christmas. The hard candy metaphor suggests that life can simultaneously be hard and sweet. Have you heard this song, and do you think of it as a Christmas song?

With 50 million copies sold, not only is Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" the best-selling Christmas song of all time, it's also the best-selling single ever, according to Guinness World Records. It was written by Irving Berlin, a Russian-born immigrant who, interestingly enough, did not celebrate Christmas, as he was Jewish. Berlin's three-week-old son had died on Christmas day in 1928, so every year on December 25, he and his wife visited their baby's grave, and this inspired the song. He wrote "White Christmas" for a musical the 1942 classic film Holiday Inn and ended up winning an Academy Award for the song. In 1954, it was the title track of another Bing Crosby Christmas musical, White Christmas. Did you know the sad backstory of this Christmas song?

So, last question will hopefully settle the long-standing debate, is Die Hard a Christmas movie or not? It takes place on Christmas, true enough. Most Christmas movies explore themes like redemption, family, success and the true meaning of Christmas. They usually end with a sweet, heart-warming moment where everyone comes together in holiday cheer. So, what is the verdict...
