Trivia
There are no words to describe how much I despised the ice breaker activities at meetings and corporate training sessions in my working days. But, there was an activity that always caught my interest. The task was to exchange "facts" (two true and one lie) about yourself with another member of the group. Each then had to try to identify which of these were true and which was the lie. Frankly, I was lousy at coming up with a story and worse at uncovering the lie. Can you tell the difference in the stories below?

In the late 1800's, my great grandmother's grandfather (let's call him Fritz) owned a beer garden in downtown Memphis. It was not uncommon at that time for men of certain standing to have what we will call a special companion. Customarily, this young woman was provided with an apartment. Wives, in true Victorian style, were unaware of these arrangements. Or were supposed to be. Unfortunately for Fritz, a disgruntled waiter went to his wife (let's call her Maria) and told her about the apartment which was being refurnished to suit a certain young lady (we won't call her anything). No one knows how Maria pulled it off, but when Fritz came home that evening, all of the new furniture had been installed in his home. Neither Fritz nor Maria ever spoke of the matter though they were married for another thirty some years. Truth or lie?

My grandfather smoked three packs of Camel unfiltered a day. He also drank. And he gambled-unsuccessfully. In 1937, the house was in foreclosure and there was no money for the children's Christmas. Granny was preparing to leave for her parents' farm with the kids when they were notified that Grandpa had won $5000. A flour company had sponsored a contest asking people to name The Nameless Cake. Grandpa's entry- The Gypsy Round-a-Layer Cake- won first prize. Like something out of a movie, the family was saved. So?

For some unknown reason, when my son was in grade school he decided his favorite tv program was Antiques Roadshow. He was also convinced that half the contents of the house were worthy of being showcased and could potentially make us a fortune. In 2005, his dearest wish came true. The show came to Memphis. We hauled the "it's so ugly, it's cute" floor vase I had inherited from my grandmother to the convention center. We stood in line forever and a day. And Boy Howdy! He had to be the happiest kid in Tennessee when we were told that vase was genuine Rookwood pottery and was worth about $500. We still have the vase; my will specifically leaves this to him. While my son really did love Antiques Roadshow and was ready to loot our house in hopes of striking it rich, we never went to the show. I own no Rookwood. Were you able to tell which story was the lie?
