Trivia
Travel may be discouraged for most of us this year, but that doesn't mean we can't explore some fascinating destinations. So, to make the world a bit more accessible and fun, let's discover one "no-way-it's-true", fascinating fact about countries you may not know -- even if you've travelled to them before. In a nod to one survey creator who has mastered the art of the multi-part survey (always enjoy those ones), here's the last survey of world travel trivia.

The South American country of Chile has only volunteer firefighters who are entirely unpaid. To become a volunteer firefighter there is a waiting list in every single town and city across Chile, and it often takes years to get an open slot, typically another member must sponsor the person applying. It is seen as more important and patriotic than volunteering to join the military. It is for life. In 2014, a massive fire in Valparaiso sparked debate about whether this arrangement should change. Have you ever been a volunteer firefighter, or a paid firefighter?

Cuba has a literacy rate of 99.8%, one of the highest in the world. Following the Cuban Revolution, Castro's government launched the Cuban Literacy Campaign with the aim of abolishing illiteracy and making school accessible to everyone, especially people from marginalized backgrounds. Education became mandatory from ages 6 -15, and private schools and universities were nationalized. Literate Cubans, some as young as 16 years old, were sent to rural areas to teach adults and children how to read and write. Are you surprised that Cuba has such a high literacy rate?

Spain is home to the oldest restaurant in the world, according to the Guinness Book of Records (counted as continuously operating). Established in 1725 and located close to the Plaza Mayor in Madrid, the restaurant Sobrino de Botín serves traditional Spanish food. Their specialty is a meat dish, 'cochinillo asado' (roasted suckling pig) and yes, it's good. Have you ever had the pleasure of eating at this restaurant?

When you think of the Netherlands, stock market may not immediately jump into your mind, but amazingly, the first stock market in the world was invented by Dutch legislators and businessmen back in 1602. This was done as a means of funding the Dutch East India Company and its long trade-based voyages from the Netherlands. The Amsterdam Stock Exchange was also created in the same year, and many consider this to be the oldest 'modern' exchange in the world. Have you ever "played" the stock market?

I don't imagine North Korea is on anyone's "must visit" list, but their government has 28 official hairstyles approved and all men and women in the country have to follow the same hairstyles. All other hairstyles are banned. Spiked hair is exclusively banned because the government thinks it's rebellious. This North Korea restriction was brought in by the country's leader Kim Jong-Un in 2013 where he did not include his own hairstyle because he wanted to keep it unique. Punishment ranges from small fines to imprisonment. Have you ever rebelled (perhaps in your teen years) with your style of haircut?
