Trivia
When the French government was organizing the International Exposition of 1889 to celebrate the centenary of the French Revolution, a competition was held for designs for a suitable monument. More than 100 plans were submitted, and the Centennial Committee accepted that of the noted bridge engineer Gustave Eiffel. Eiffel’s concept of a tower built almost entirely of open-lattice wrought iron aroused amazement, skepticism, and no little opposition on aesthetic grounds. When completed, the tower served as the entrance gateway to the exposition.

Nothing remotely like the Eiffel Tower had ever been built; it was twice as high as the dome of St. Peter's in Rome or the Great Pyramid of Giza. In contrast to such older monuments, the tower was erected in only about two years (1887–89), with a small labour force, at slight cost. The tower itself is 300 metres (984 feet) high. It rests on a base that is 5 metres (17 feet) high, and a television antenna atop the tower gives it a total elevation of 324 metres (1,063 feet). The Eiffel Tower was the tallest structure in the world until the topping off of the Chrysler Building in New York City in 1929. Were you aware that Gustave Eiffel's company, also built the metal framework for another world-famous monument: the Statue of Liberty (New York, United States)?

To protect it from corrosion, the iron is covered with a thick coat of paint that has to be renewed every 7 years. This repainting schedule was recommended by Gustave Eiffel himself and is still respected to date. The Eiffel Tower is due to be repainted—a time-intensive paint job starting in October that will take around 15,850 US gallons of paint. How many years do you think it will take to re-paint the Tower?

Its height and unique silhouette floating above the Paris landscape quickly made the Eiffel Tower one of the most popular attractions in Paris. The Tower's destiny is closely linked to that of the city of Paris, the capital of France and the Eiffel Tower's owner. Since the beginning, the Eiffel Tower drew attention and served as the theatre for numerous events in the life of Paris and France: the grandiose fireworks on July 14 ("Bastille Day"), national-level events and large-scale sporting events. The so-called "Iron Lady" has been painted 18 times in the past. It is a painstaking process done by hand by team of 25 painters. First, they must strip the layers of paint, a dangerous process due to the lead embedded in the old layers. The monument has already been painted several times in varying tones, from yellow-ochre to red-brown, before becoming the bronze color it is today. In 1899 it was even painted with a gradient shading, fading from orange yellow at the bottom to a light yellow at the top. But since 1968, the tower has maintained its signature brown, seen by many as a harmonious color that suits the surrounding cityscape .The City of Paris and the French ministry of culture is now deciding whether to paint it red, another color or stick with "Eiffel Tower Brown. The Eiffel Tower was built in record time: 2 years, 2 months and 5 days. From late January 1887 to March 31, 1889. In addition to the technical and architectural prowess, the Tower's rapid construction also represented an unparalleled achievement at that time. There were no serious injuries or deaths during the construction of the Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Tower weighs approximately 10,100 tons. The metal framework alone weighs 7,300 tons while the paint that protects the structure "only' weighs 60 tons! Are you surprised that the paint weighs so much?

The North and South pillars of the Eiffel Tower both originally had Otis elevators that carried people up and down from the ground floor to the second floor, until they were dismantled in 1910. However, a Schneider electric elevator was installed in 1965 and modernised in 1995, then again revised again in 1997. Are you surprised there were elevators from the very beginning?
