Air Canada Ordered to Compensate Pilots Over Denied Religious Vaccine Exemptions

An arbitrator ruled that Air Canada must provide back pay to seven pilots who were denied religious exemptions from its COVID-19 vaccine policy, finding this violated the Canadian Human Rights Act. The pilots were placed on unpaid leave after failing to meet the airline’s requirement to prove “sincere religious belief,” but the arbitrator determined their convictions were genuine even without supporting letters from religious leaders. As a result, the airline has been ordered to compensate them for lost income during that period.
