The Israel-Hamas war began last October after Hamas militants killed about 1,200 people and took another 240 people hostage in a surprise attack. Since then, the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry has said more than 24,000 people have been killed in Israel's subsequent counterattacks. A growing number of academics, legal scholars and governments are accusing the Israeli government of carrying out a genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. The term was codified by the UN in the 1948 Genocide Convention and defined as "acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such." But a high death toll alone is not proof of genocide. Legal experts say one key element is intent. In your opinion, is this a genocide against the Palestinian people?
