Canadians Back Decision to End U.S. Trade Talks
A new Angus Reid Institute poll found that 76% of Canadians believe Canada made the right decision by ending trade negotiations with the U.S. rather than accepting the terms being offered. Prime Minister Mark Carney pulled Canadian negotiators from the talks shortly before new 50% U.S. tariffs took effect and later announced that Canada would respond with dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs beginning Sept. 8. Confidence in a future trade deal remains low, with nearly half of respondents saying they are not confident Canada and the U.S. will eventually reach a new agreement.
