Majority of Americans, for first time, support building border wall

1. The new Monmouth University poll found that 53 percent of respondents support backing a border wall, which the polling center says is the first time a majority of respondents supported the proposal since it started asking the question in 2015. Forty-six percent said they opposed building the wall, according to the poll. Do you support building a wall between US and Mexico?

2. Support appears to have strengthened as immigration continues to be a top concern ahead of the election and as former President Trump tightens his grip on the Republican presidential nomination. The poll found that more than 8 in 10 Americans see illegal immigration as a very serious or somewhat serious problem, a sharp rise over the past decade. The poll also found that 61 percent of Americans say those seeking political asylum at the border should be required to stay in Mexico while their claims are processed, which is an increase from the 51 percent who said the same in 2019.
