Flu Outbreak Spreads Among Air Force Recruits After Vaccine Mandate Dropped

An Air Force basic training facility in San Antonio, Texas, is dealing with a flu outbreak among recruits after the annual flu vaccine was made optional for U.S. military personnel. At least 159 cases and two hospitalizations had been reported among trainees at Lackland Air Force Base. The flu vaccine had previously been mandatory for service members, but the policy changed earlier this year. Supporters of mandatory vaccination say it helps protect people living and training in close quarters, while opponents say individuals should be able to make their own medical decisions.
