Tellwut Online Survey Finds 64% Not Planning To Shop In Stores This Friday

Press Releases
11/23/2016

A Tellwut online survey found that 64% of US respondents will not be participating in the in-store mall madness otherwise known as Black Friday, with only 23% planning to hit the stores while 13% remain undecided about venturing out. Along with the droves of crowds as the main reason people plan to stay home, non-shoppers listed the torture of traffic congestion as the number two reason to avoid this Friday's madness. Tellwutter member Sasmiles said, “I will not shop that day primarily because I think you take your own life in danger being out on roadways with very sleep deprived people.”

Not far behind, the third factor in avoiding shopping is that respondents feel the sales are not worth the effort. Tellwutter SweetSherry17 comments, “Why go to the store when you can get most of these Friday deals online at the retailer's website? The stores only have a limited amount. I prefer to buy online at the sale price instead of fighting with someone over one sale item.” Rounding out the top five reasons not to go battle the crowds were “don’t need anything”, and lastly “don’t have the cash”.

Slightly more Americans, clocking in at 33% will choose to do their bargain hunting online this Friday. Though crowds and chaos can be avoided online, 37% of Americans are still choosing to opt out of shopping while another 30% are wavering on the idea of pulling out the plastic for their at home purchases.

Millennials aged 18-34 are more apt to both shop in stores (33%) and shop online (44%), with the 50+ group having the least interest with only 17% shopping in stores and 25% shopping online.

What store has the best deals? Walmart has come out as the store that respondents believe will have the best Friday deals. What are people shopping for? Apparel, including clothing, shoes and accessories are the number one items on shoppers’ lists with tech and electronics following second, household items third, toys fourth and health and beauty products fifth. How much will people spend this Friday? Respondents will spend on average approximately $200; marginally higher than last year. Is Black Friday the best day to get a bargain? Only 31% of respondents think that the lowest prices of the year are offered during the annual event.
