Bank of Canada holds rates at 2.75%, says trade war could cause a recession

The Bank of Canada on Wednesday held its key policy rate at 2.75 per cent, its first pause after seven consecutive cuts, and said the uncertainty around U.S. tariffs made it impossible to issue regular economic forecasts. The bank said it was difficult to predict the path of the economy for the long term. For the first time since the pandemic, the Bank of Canada skipped its usual economic forecast and presented two scenarios instead. In the first, tariffs are mostly lifted, causing a brief GDP stall, followed by moderate growth and inflation dipping to 1.5% before returning to 2%. In the second, a prolonged global trade war leads to a year-long Canadian recession and inflation peaking at 3.5% in mid-2026. Bank Governor Macklem warned this would permanently reduce Canada’s economic potential and standard of living.

Eco guilt strikes most Americans four times a month

The average American experiences 48 days of annual “eco guilt” — the feeling that they could be doing more to help the environment. A new survey of 2,000 Americans pinpointed the specific number of days per month that people feel strong guilt around their environmental habits and found this strikes 3.8 times per month on average — nearly 50 times per year. From wasting food (31%) to tossing items that could have been recycled (29%) to leaving the TV on when not watching (27%), many people say they regularly feel they could improve their environmental habits.
