A strong majority of Canadians want to see U.S. President Joe Biden re-elected in November, but many expect a Donald Trump return is more likely, according to a Nanos Research survey.

Canada could follow U.S. and ban TikTok, tech analyst says

If the U.S. bans TikTok over national security concerns, Canada could follow suit. "We can't afford to be out of sync with them on issues of digital policy that are this important," tech analyst Carmi Levy told CTV News(opens in a new tab). "We are going to have to follow the U.S.' lead, one way or another." The U.S. Senate is now considering a bill that would ban the popular video app nationwide(opens in a new tab) unless its China-based owner sells its stake in the business. There are fears that Beijing-based technology firm ByteDance Ltd. could be legally compelled to provide user data to Chinese authorities. "It is known as an aggressive data harvester; it collects even more data than the average (app)," Levy explained in an interview this week. Levy expects policymakers in Ottawa will closely watch U.S. developments and follow their lead in the months ahead.

Majority of Americans support social media ban for children under 16

A new poll found the majority of Americans surveyed support banning children from using social media until they are at least 16 years old. The poll from Grinnell College released on Wednesday found that 55% of the 1,005 adult participants favored this ban. When filtered for participants with children under 18 at home, the percentage in favor of the ban rose to 65%. More than half (52%) were in favor of allowing parents to sue social media platforms for content that was harmful to their children. 57% supported banning students using smartphones in schools.
