Ahmaud Arbery’s killers ask appeals court to overturn their hate crime convictions
The hate crimes trial centered on Gregory McMichael, Travis McMichael and William Bryan’s racial bias — a motive that prosecutors in the state case largely avoided.
Feds say California’s facial hair ban for prison guards amounts to religious discrimination
The federal government is asking a court to halt California’s enforcement of a rule requiring prison guards to be clean-shaven, saying it amounts to religious discrimination for Sikhs, Muslims and others who wear beards as an expression of their faith. The corrections department maintains its no-beard rule stems from the need for certain employees, including guards, to wear tight-fitting respirators, with state law requiring that facial hair not interfere with the use of such masks that were worn during the coronavirus pandemic. In an emailed statement to The Associated Press, the state agency defended its policy. "“Tight-fitting respirator masks are legally required under workplace safety laws for certain functions in state prison operations, as well as for the safety and protection of the incarcerated population and other staff. CDCR is fully compliant with the law, and we are confident the court will agree."

Sping Cleaning
Now that spring has arrived, many Americans are set to begin their once-a-year spring clean.
Chocolate prices have tripled. What does that mean for your Easter egg basket?
Cocoa prices have tripled in the last 12 months due to the spread of bean disease among cacao crops in West Africa, where more than 70 per cent of the global cocoa supply is produced. The resulting cocoa crisis is pressuring chocolate makers who, during the typically busy Easter holiday, are trying to sustain business — and sweet-toothed customers who are trying to curb spending. "I think for those that haven't bought candy since, say, Halloween, the price of chocolate on the store shelves may be a bit of a surprise," said Billy Roberts, a senior analyst of food and beverage at CoBank. Hershey's has introduced a line of non-chocolate Easter treats, like cookies and cream treats, lemon KitKat bars and mixing in gummy bears in its assortment bags, though a spokesperson said these additions are not connected to rising cocoa prices.
