The new series 'North Of North' which recently came to Netflix On April 10, after previously airing on CBC starting January) is groundbreaking for two reasons. As the first production of its scale filmed in the Arctic Canadian territory of Nunavut, it showcases the cultural and geographic richness of Canada's northernmost territory. And while it is not the first TV show to highlight and feature Inuit actors, it is the first to encompass the Inuit culture, fashion, talent and lifestyle to the degree it has. The series not only had a real impact on the communities where it filmed, but it's bringing authentic storytelling from Inuit creators to a wider viewing audience. Have you watched 'North Of North'?

The series was mainly filmed in Iqaluit, Nunavut's capital city, with the local curling rink doubling as the production stage for the show's sets. Hundreds of people in the town helped bring the show to life, with 500 locals serving as background actors — including the mayor — in addition to the series' 45 Canadian cast members. Iqaluit is also the hometown of Inuk actress Anna Lambe, who stars as Siaja, the main lead in the show. Have you ever been to Iqaluit?

The show's storyline is universal -- a young woman leaves her marriage to "find" herself" in a town where everyone knows everyone -- and it's a rare combination of touching, funny, thought-provoking and informative. Every touch, from the fashion, the music, the jewelry, the language to the customs are authentic. It prominently features Inuit fashion and jewelry, particularly hand-beaded earrings and traditional Inuit clothing. The show highlights the work of Inuk artists and features diverse styles, including floral cotton silapaaqs (hooded shirt jackets), parkas, and beaded jewelry, reflecting both traditional and contemporary Inuit fashion. Do you like the fashion worn on the show?

I watched it when it first came out and loved the series. It's been renewed for a second season, which makes sense as it had rave reviews. So, if you haven't seen it, I'd suggest investing some time (it's only 8 episodes so an easy watch). "Tunngasugit" to the world of North Of North. In Inuktitut, this means "welcome". Did you know Nunavut has four official languages: Inuinnaqtun, Inuktitut, English and French?
