I am having to be really discerning with what I buy by making tradeoffs between essential items like milk or bread.

I would purchase frozen because you get more produce that lasts longer and is not likely less expensive per ounce. Seasonal produce may be a good buy too.

Canned veggies are often best. With fresh, you don't know how "fresh" they really are, whether they were gassed to stay looking fresh or something else. Frozen is great *if* at no time in the journey it partially thawed. Canned doesn't have these probems.

Sorry but I can't truthfully answer this one because here in upstate central PA in the States near Hershey aka Chocolatetown USA we are surrounded by farms and ranches and 90% of our stores stock comes to our stores locally. Although some of our prices have decreased, outside of alcoholic beverages, we have had very few increases. The increases are TexMex foods from Mexico and Latin America which I loathe and which make me sick so I do not buy them anyway.

I buy small quantities of fresh vegetables in season and also grow my own. Mostly I buy frozen vegetables because they are good for longer storage. I buy only on a good sale and usually buy store brand. I trade off 90% of my grocery purchases to store brand. The other 10% are name brand for which I will not substitute. I am buying very little processed, packaged, convenience food. I've been making my own bread, cold brew coffee, sauces, gravies, and anything else I can make at home for less than I can buy it.
