Tellwut Online Survey Finds 75% Believe Police Officer Should be Charged For The Shooting of Missouri Teen
The subject of police brutality has been a topic of debate after Missouri teen, Michael Brown, was shot and killed by a police officer. Although there has been mixed opinion on whether the police used excessive force when dealing with Brown, an online survey with over 2,000 votes revealed that 75% of panel members believe that the police officer that shot and killed Brown should be charged, while 25% of voters do not think the police officer should be charged.
The death of Michael Brown prompted protests to erupt in Missouri for several days, as the public demanded justice. During the protests police armed with military weaponry demanded that the public discontinue recording them with their cellular devices or else arrests would ensue. These demands were also directed to the media as two journalists, Wesley Lowery Ryan J. Reilly and Ryan J. Reilly, were arrested and detained for capturing coverage of the protest. The arrests of the journalists along with several civilians has led to the question of whether the public should be allowed to record police during the course of their duties. When asked whether Tellwut panel members think that civilians should have the right to record footage of the police during their duties, survey results revealed that an overwhelming response of 78% of voters feel that the public should have the right to record the police, while 8% of voters do not think that the public should be permitted to record the police, and 14% of voters remained undecided.
As the death of Michael Brown is reminiscent of the death of Trayvon Martin who was shot and killed by police watchdog, George Zimmerman; many question whether police are properly trained to deal with civilians when difficult issues arise. When asked whether panel members think that police officers need better training when dealing with civilians, surveys results revealed that an overwhelming 76% of voters felt that police officers should get better training when dealing with civilians, while 10% of voters felt that officers are properly trained to do their job and 14% of voters remained undecided.
As it is apparent that the majority of panel members believe that the police need better training to deal with challenging situations, one can only hope that these concerns are addressed and better programs and training are enforced to ensure that police officers find different ways to deal with civilians. Overall, it is important that we live in a society where all bodies are valued in order for equality to take root.
