In 1984, a clothing company called Ogori Shōji opened a shop in Hiroshima, Japan called 'Unique Clothing Warehouse'. They decided to register the brand under the contraction 'Uni-Clo', from the 'Unique Clothing' part of the name. But in 1988, the staff in charge of registering the name misread the 'C' as a 'Q', and it stuck. The name of the store was changed to Uniqlo, and ten years from the date of its first opening, there were over 100 of the popular casual clothing shops in Japan. Have you ever shopped at this store, and did you know that was where their name came from?

Many companies have rumors about how they came up with their name. For example, it's rumored that Adidas got its name from the acronym 'All Day I Dream About Soccer' (or, in the alternative, 'All Day I Dream About Sport'). Not true. The name is an abbreviation of the name of founder Adolf ("Adi") Dassler. The Dassler family began manufacturing shoes after World War I. In 1949, Adolf named a new company adidas (originally it was lowercase like that) after his nickname Adi and his last name Dassler. So Adi Dassler became adidas. Strangely enough, his brother Rudolf did the same thing with his company name, calling his new company Ruda (Rudolf Dassler). Soon after forming Ruda, though, he changed the name of the company to Puma, which remains its name today. Were you familiar with how the name Adidas originated?
