You may have heard the quote attributed to Alexander Graham Bell about the invention of the telephone "“One day there will be a telephone in every major city in the USA.” Fortunately someone else took the idea and developed it making Bell a $billionaire. Other business leaders have not been so lucky. Here are some examples.

Perhaps the biggest business mistake belongs to the CEO of Sears who thought the internet was just a passing fad. As the definitive name in mail-order at the time, Sears had the warehouses and logistics in place to be what Amazon is today, years before Bezos made it there. It has been estimated that this lost the company at least one *trillion* dollars. Did you ever shop using the Sears catalogue?

Maybe not as damaging but certainly more publicized was the person at the Price Waterhouse accounting firm at the Oscar's a few years ago who mixed up the envelopes and messed up the Best Picture announcement. As a result of this error the entire cast of the movie La La Land came on stage to celebrate their Oscar, only to turn around and leave when the cast of Moonlight found out they actually won. Do you enjoy watching the Oscars when things go wrong?

Sometimes governments try to boost the economy by helping the business community. When the person doing the helping is totally inept the result can be disastrous. One recent example was (short lived) PM of the UK Liz Truss. She took over when her predecessor Boris Johnston resigned , went to extreme lengths to take care of her wealthy pals at the top, took the UK currency to historic lows with a poorly planned "mini budget", killed off the housing market, announced $60billion of unplanned tax cuts, then went into hiding and quit after just 7 weeks in the job. She is famous as the shortest serving PM in UK history. The previous shortest serving PM died in office. Ignoring Trump, Biden and Trudeau, can you think of another politician who cost the country as much as she did?

Another expensive executive decision was Target's expansion into Canada which collapsed in 2 years and cost them $Billions. Canadians were expecting competitive prices and good products. Instead we got Walmart quality products at higher prices and service like a Moscow store with inventory control to match. Empty shelves and bad service killed any goodwill Target brought over from the US. Eagle Hardware and Crispy Creme donuts were other companies that treated the Canadian market like they were doing us the favour letting us shop there. If you are Canadian, did you give business to those 3 companies. If you are American, have you ever bought from Tim Hortons? Please comment about your experience.
