People of all ages gathered in February 2023 to put together the Dowdle puzzle, "What a Wonderful World". The puzzle, measuring 8 ft tall (2.44m) and 29 ft wide (8.84 m) pictured special landmarks from around the world, like Mount Rushmore and the Taj Mahal. Organizer Nina Grasse called the event a fun way to meet new people. Pictured is the Grasse (formerly Hoof) Funeral Home. Would you be comfortable working on a jigsaw puzzle in a funeral home? The 75-pound puzzle was put together in 60 individually-packaged sections, each consisting of one thousand pieces. Upon completion a month later, participants were upset to learn that the puzzle was missing a piece! Why do you think a piece was missing?

With so many participants, it got misplaced.

The manufacturer sent the funeral home a one thousand-piece section of the puzzle bearing the missing piece (retrieved from another copy of the puzzle that was missing a piece). Very few manufacturers have the ability to replace a missing piece because of how puzzles are made. Have you ever lost any puzzle pieces?

While researching this story, I learned there is a remedy if you lost a piece of a puzzle you cherish. You can have a replacement piece made by a UK company called Jigsaw Puzzle Doctor. Just send them the pieces that surround the missing piece; and using laser technology, they cut the shape of a cardboard or wooden piece that will fit snugly. Providing a photo of the puzzle picture is helpful, but not required. Custom replacement of one piece costs $25-30, plus postage. Did you realize this service is available?
